Davidson County Community College was chartered in 1958 as an Industrial Education Center designed to provide adults the education and skills needed to move from an agricultural to a manufacturing-based economy. The first classes were held at the former Junior Order Home on Highway 8 in Lexington.

In 1963, the campus consisted of only the Sinclair Building built on a 22-acre site at the juncture of U.S. 29-70 and Old Greensboro Road. It was home to 125 students enrolled in vocational and technical courses and another 51 studying adult education and service programs.
