Here at Thorntons, we've been crafting chocolate for over 100 years. That's a lot of know-how that goes into each and every chocolate we make.

It all started back in 1911 when travelling confectioner, Joseph William Thornton, opened up a sweet shop in Sheffield.

He didn't know then just how successful it would become, so he carried on with his day job and entrusted his 14‐year‐old son Norman to run the shop. He handed over the keys and told him to "make this the best sweet shop in town" ‐ and that's exactly what he did.

Word was starting to spread about the Thorntons shop, so Joseph brought on his brother, Stanley. With lots of quirky sweet treats like ‘Violet Cachous', ‘Sweet Lips' and ‘Phul-Nanas', they sold the best confectionery around. But it wasn't until the 1920's that the brothers were making their hand‐made chocolate truffles, crystallised fondants and, of course, their famous Thorntons special toffee.

Then, there was no stopping them.

A lot has changed since our first humble store in Sheffield. By the 1970's we had nearly 90 shops, and now we have a grand total of 228. But some things have stayed exactly the same. We still only use the finest cocoa beans to create our chocolate ‐ whether it's dark, milk or white.

And whether we're making our famous toffees and chocolates or hampers stuffed full of treats, our passion for chocolate and love of craft still shines through in everything we do.

Thought at Work is a student run conference at the Rochester Institute

of Technology. Next month is our 10 year anniversary, although this is only

the second consecutive year. The event was founded in 2003 by 3 RIT

Industrial Design students and repeated in 2004. After an 8 year hiatus,

we revived Thought at Work with an exciting amount of success. We

hosted 18 professional speakers and over 250 students from 8 schools.

Our focus this year is on the emerging collision of Industrial and

Interaction design disciplines. We've invited over 15 presenters to come

speak about passions of their own, as they pertain to design. The end goal

is to learn a ton, enjoy ourselves, and make some new connections.

I believe there is an opportunity to create a new paradigm in the personal development industry. The democratization of self-help is the future wave of the human potential movement, much in the same way that decentralization is apparent in industries ranging from telecommunications, music, and publishing. It is also apparent that previous thought leadership models have not been successful at their goals, since much of the world is paralyzed in strife and hardship.

It is my belief that what the world needs millions of effective and empowered mentors, healers, coaches, writers, and people of service, to heal the fatal social and psychological fractures that threaten our very existence. To create these thought leaders, we must remove the barriers to entry, without qualification, to the station of thought leadership, and establish a community learning model, where we all take one-another by the hand, and teach each other where we are at in life. This model must accept that everyone has something valuable to offer and say in the great conversation of life — from advanced degreed educators, to a so-called illiterate grandmother's hug. I believe thought and heart leadership can present in many ways.

The shift in perspective of what a thought leader is will pave the way for this vision to become a reality. As I have written previously, 'the task of leadership is to create more leaders,' and, 'the distinguishing characteristic of a true leader is pure elation in seeing others prosper.'
