Founded in 1996, the mission of the Stamford Public Education Foundation (SPEF) is to support the students and teachers in Stamford's Public Schools through community collaboration and philanthropy. In 2016-17, SPEF provided direct service programming to all 21 of Stamford's public schools, plus J.M. Wright Technical High School.

At the elementary level, the Foundation supports literacy initiatives, such as Book Giveaways and Family Literacy Nights. It also couples volunteer mentors with students in grades three through five for a Service-Learning mentoring experience. At the middle and high school levels, its focus is on preparing students for post-secondary success in college, career training or full time employment through its nationally-recognized Stamford Mentoring Program.

Highlights of this school year, which ended June 2017, included:

•Direct service to 21 Stamford public schools

•Stamford Mentoring Program to 850 students (note: 71% were economically disadvantaged)

•Math tutoring for 90 ninth & tenth graders

•Distributed 5,000+ new books

•Served 232 children/parents through Family Literacy Nights in Stamford's south end (Hispanic population)

•Supported 113 students and 17 teams for the Odyssey of the Mind program (4 teams qualified for the World's Tournament)

•Graduated a diverse group of 28 parent leaders from the Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) and 23 parent leaders through People Empowering People (PEP)
