La vallée de la Meuse s'est creusée en plein massif de couches houillères et, à l'époque quaternaire, le fleuve a déposé dans son lit, large de ½ à 2 km, des alluvions caillouteuses. Les pentes et les crevasses ont été recouvertes de limon un peu plus tard.
