Volwaardige leverancier duurzame energie

De onafhankelijke Mijnwater B.V. (in 2013 opgericht) heeft de ambitie om het project van de gemeente Heerlen uit te rollen tot een volwaardig duurzaam energiebedrijf. De basis van het mijnwatersysteem ligt ondergronds, in het enorme stelsel van verlaten mijngangen waar zowel warm als koud water opgeslagen en gewonnen kan worden. Daarnaast voorziet Mijnwater B.V. ook in andere energie-uitwisselingen, die niet direct in verbinding staan met de ondergrondse mijnwaterbuffers. Het bedrijf heeft inmiddels diverse omvangrijke gebouwcomplexen in Heerlen op mijnwaterenergie aangesloten. 270 woningen, diverse kantoorgebouwen, (basis)scholen, kinderdagverblijf, een sporthal en een tweetal supermarkten ervaren het comfort van mijnwaterenergie. Met deze (en toekomstige) aansluitingen levert Mijnwater B.V. een belangrijke bijdrage aan de ambitie van Parkstad Limburg om in 2020 tot een reductie van 65% CO2 uitstoot te komen.

Voor de winning van steenkool groef de Nederlandse overheid een uitgestrekt stelsel van mijngangen in Heerlen en omgeving. Na de sluiting van de mijnen in de jaren 70 van de vorige eeuw, vulden de schachten zich met grondwater dat door de aarde werd opgewarmd. Hoe dieper, hoe hoger de temperatuur.
