Kadimastem is developing the use of pluripotent cells for manufacturing specific human tissues for two separate purposes (using different ES cell lines):

a) Therapeutic applications in regenerative medicine

As an example, Kadimastem runs a program to produce human pancreatic islets that could be used for transplantation in diabetic patients.

b) Pharmaceutical R&D applications for drug screening

Kadimastem produces a number of human cell and tissue systems that constitute screening platforms to search for agonists or antagonists of specific biological processes, with the aim of developing efficient and safe drugs. Such systems, using different hES-derived human tissues, can also be applied for evaluating toxic or other side effects of R&D drugs. Screening in vitro with human tissue cultures has advantages over the classical reliance on laboratory animals.

A main asset of the Company is efficient method to differentiate human ES cells into pancreatic endocrine cells and/or oligodendrocytes. The oligodendrocytes are capable of in vitro myelination in co-cultures with neuronal axons. This system has been validated to test compounds that can stimulate nerve myelination, by acting at various developmental steps in this process.

These technologies were originally developed in the laboratory of Prof. Michel Revel at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Rehovot, Israel) and Kadimastem has an exclusive license from Yeda R&D (the TTO of the Weizmann Institute, Israel) for their commercialization. Kadimastem is developing these technologies in its state of the art 1,000 m2 facility in Nes Ziona, Israel, for controlled production under best industrial practices.
