Our History

Jewish Family Service of Metropolitan Detroit (JFS) came into being as two local relief organizations -- the Hebrew Ladies Sewing Circle and the Self Help Circle -- joined in a commitment to meet the needs of the local Jewish community. JFS incorporated in 1928, with the specific mission of "Finding homes for orphan children and supplying homemakers for families with an ill or absent mother."

Before World War II, JFS helped Jewish families new to the country acculturate to life in Detroit and provided assistance to ensure their safety and well-being. After the Holocaust, JFS' work changed dramatically, as the agency worked tirelessly to resettle and serve the material and psychological needs of Holocaust Survivors. In subsequent years, JFS joined with local and national partners to resettle thousands of Jewish Refugees from the Former Soviet Union.

Over the course of 86 years, JFS has evolved into a comprehensive social service provider, helping individuals and families within the Jewish and broader communities. Most recently, JFS has provided a critical lifeline to Metro Detroit families and individuals affected by the recession, underscoring the importance of the agency's present and future in the community.

Our Services

JFS currently operates 30 separate programs with a combined budget of more than $10 million, carried out by a staff of more than 100. These programs serve thousands in our community each year, with services uniquely tailored to individuals' and families' specific needs. The agency's programming centers on three core areas: safety net services for individuals and families, counseling services, and services for older adults.

ABOUT JGSOC

JG Summit Olefins Corporation (JGSOC) operates the country's first naphtha cracker facility. It uses Lummus Technology in manufacturing polymer-grade ethylene and propylene which are feedstocks for the JGSPC PE and PP plant. The cracker's two other main products, pygas and crude C4 (in addition to ethylene and propylene), are raw materials in the manufacture of intermediate petrochemicals benzene, toluene, xylene and butadiene which are used in a myriad of applications such as for solvents, dyes, paints, foams and rubber, to name a few.

JGSOC was incorporated in 2008. Engineering works for the naphtha cracker started in 2009. Commercial operations commenced in November 2014.

This naphtha cracker project allows back integration with JGSPC's PE and PP polymerization facilities, eliminating the need to import ethylene and propylene and ensuring stability in the supply and competitiveness of prices of widely used PE and PP resins for the Philippine plastics industry.

JG Summit Petrochemical Corporation (JGSPC) is the largest manufacturer of polyolefins in the Philippines. It is the first and only integrated polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) resin manufacturer in the country. It produces EVALENE® branded PE and PP resins using UNIPOL™ technology.

JGSPC was incorporated in 1994 as a joint venture between JG Summit Holdings, Inc. and Marubeni Corporation. The company was given pioneer status by the Board of Investments in the same year. Suhag Textiles was one of the first factories in 1940 in Srinagar then,located at Goggi Bagh in Srinagar-Kashmir.

Both Lala Gurshai Mal Saigal ji & Shrimati Suhagwanti Saigal ji were the pillars of the Swadeshi Movement in Kashmir.Made in India was the main target of the industry.

My grandmother was an inspiration for all, as she had dedicated her life to preserve the traditions and purity of the Indian culture. And my grandfather was a great visionary. Both as a team were the pillars of the industry in Kashmir.

In 1974 after 34years my grandmother made me join her. At that time I was only 11years old. I was very much attached to her. During summer holidays, I would always take out time to learn about Handlooms in the factory which was just a walking distant from our home at 21-Wazir Bagh. It was really a great experience to learn age old weaving and precision techniques of the craft. In fact the Mughal Art really does fascinate me a lot.

Time changed and in 2008 exactly after 34years launched a company JiKashmir with a brandname Ji for exclusive Cashmere in Ludhiana.
