1996 yılında Cumhurbaşkanımız Sayın Recep Tayyip Erdoğan'ın İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanlığı döneminde kurulan İSMEK'ten şimdiye kadar eğitim alan öğrenci sayısı 2 milyonu aşmıştır. Bu yılki hedef ise 233 bin yeni öğrenciye ulaşmaktır.

Halen İstanbul'un 38 ilçesinde, 235 kurs merkezinde 412 branşta, 33 alanda faaliyetlerini sürdüren İSMEK, ülkemizde ve dünyada model olarak alınmakta ve bir "halk üniversitesi" olarak gösterilmektedir.

İstanbul halkının sanatsal ve mesleki eğitim ihtiyaçlarına cevap vermek için kurulan İSMEK, ülkemizde işgücü piyasasının ihtiyaç duyduğu alanlarda kalifiye eleman yetiştirmeyi, bireyleri üretici kılmayı, geleneksel sanatlarımızı canlandırmayı, şehir halkının kültürel ve sosyal gelişmelerine katkıda bulunmayı, kent kültürü ve metropolde yaşama konusunda donanımlı hale getirmeyi amaçlamaktadır.
