Since 1969, INRS has contributed to science and the training of highly qualified students in sectors of great strategic importance for our society: water, earth, and environment; energy, materials, and telecommunications; human, animal, and environmental health; and urbanization, culture, and society. Our 150 professors favour a thematic and multidisciplinary approach to training and research in order to advance scientific knowledge. Students are integrated into research teams from the start, which greatly facilitates the acquisition and development of knowledge and skills. Professors are frequently looking for students eager to contribute to the advancement of science through innovative research projects. Every year, INRS welcomes close to 700 students (40% master's and 60% doctorates). Nearly 50% of its students are women. Every year, it welcomes about 100 postdoctoral fellows. As of 2013, INRS awarded more than 2,540 degrees. El Instituto Nacional de Seguros se creó mediante la Ley No.12, del 30 de octubre de 1924 con el propósito de responder a las necesidades de protección de la sociedad costarricense.

En su creación tomaron parte algunos de los estadistas más connotados de nuestro país; el Lic. Ricardo Jiménez Oreamuno, Presidente de la República en tres ocasiones y el Lic. Tomás Soley Güell, Secretario de Hacienda y Comercio, en su tercera administración.

Don Tomás Soley redactó la Ley de Seguros, que el Presidente Jiménez Oreamuno envió al Congreso Constitucional.

Inició sus operaciones como Banco de Seguros y, en 1948, cambió el nombre a INSTITUTO NACIONAL DE SEGUROS.

El 05 de noviembre de 1925 se puso a la venta nuestra primera póliza: el Seguro de Vida. El 17 de febrero de 1926, se autoriza al Banco a manejar el Seguro de Incendio y en junio de ese mismo año, por medio de Decreto Ejecutivo No.16, asumimos la administración del Seguro sobre Accidente de Trabajo. Estos fueron los tres primeros productos que el INS puso a disposición de los costarricenses.

Los años han pasado y el INS continúa evolucionando al ritmo del tiempo y de la nueva tecnología. Ofrecemos a todos los habitantes del país una amplia gama de productos y servicios, paralela a una fuerte proyección social con programas de beneficio a los habitantes en muy diversos campos.
