The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was founded in 1909 as a result of the joint efforts of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Government of India, and the Maharaja of Mysore. In 1886, Jamsetji Tata conceived of a university of science that would work for the benefit of India, and in 1898 created an endowment for establishing such an institution. The largest Czech healthcare research and clinical base was established as early as in 1971.

The Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) currently comprises 4 specialised centres, 8 clinics, 15 specialised sites, bases and laboratories. Of the total number of 1,750 employees, 325 are medical doctors and 625 general nurses. A total of 312 beds are available, of which 83 are located in intensive care units (ICU).

Almost 1,200 cardiac surgeries, more than 4,500 cardiac catheterisations, over 1,000 coronary angioplasties are carried out in IKEM each year. In the sphere of organ transplantations, IKEM performs more than 60% of all organ transplantations. 100% of all transplantations of insulin-producing tissues (pancreas, islets of Langerhans) and more than 50% of the heart, liver and kidney transplantations in the Czech Republic are performed here. The Institute boasts a unique system of care for patients with the disease called diabetic foot. Compared to other healthcare facilities of similar type, IKEM is outstanding particularly due to its excellent applied research.
