Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, 1926 yılında genç Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin aydınlanma yolunda ışığını gençlerden alması gereğinin bilinci ile eğitime yöneldi. Ankara'da öğretmen yetiştiren bir okul açılması amacı ile dönemin önde gelen mimarlarından projeler alındı. Birinci Ulusal Mimarlık Akımının öncülerinden Mimar Kemaleddin'in başarılı bulunan projesi, kısa sürede Ankara'nın merkezinde muhteşem bir yapıya dönüşerek 'Orta Muallim Mektebi ve Terbiye Enstitüsü' adıyla açıldı ve şuanda Rektörlük merkezi olarak kullanılan binada eğitim-öğretim faaliyetlerine başladı.

Enstitünün adı 1929 yılında 'Gazi Orta Muallim Mektebi ve Terbiye Enstitüsü' olarak değiştirilir ve bu isimle uzun yıllar hizmet verir. 1976 yılında ise "Gazi Eğitim Enstitüsü" ismini alır. Enstitü, 1982 yılında 2809 sayılı kanunla "Gazi Üniversitesi" kimliğine kavuşur. Aslında bu değişim, Cumhuriyetle başlayan geleneğin yeni isimle devamıdır. Geleneğin oluşmasında Gazi Eğitim kadar, kuruluşu 1935'e kadar giden Ankara Yüksek Teknik Öğretmen ve Ankara Kız Teknik Yüksek Öğretmen Okulları ile Ankara İktisadi ve Ticari İlimler Akademisi büyük rol oynar.

Üniversite çatısı altına girdiğinde Ankara İktisadi ve Ticari İlimler Akademisi zaten bir üniversite konumundaydı. Akademi'ye bağlı olarak bugünkü İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesinin bütün bölümleri, Tıp Fakültesi, daha sonra da fakülte olacak olan Diş Hekimliği ve Eczacılık Yüksek Okulları ile Gazetecilik ve Halkla İlişkiler Yüksekokulu eğitim ve öğretimini sürdürmekteydi. Yine Ankara Devlet Mühendislik ve Mimarlık Akademisi de Gazi Üniversitesi çatısı altında yerini alır.
