In april 1995 werd de Batavia, 's werelds beste reconstructie van een 17e eeuws VOC-schip, na tien jaar bouwen te water gezet. Initiatiefnemer was scheepsbouwmeester Willem Vos. Na de voltooiing van de Batavia is op de werf begonnen met een tweede project ‘De 7 Provinciën', een 17e eeuws oorlogsschip waar Michiel de Ruyter vele zeeslagen mee heeft gevoerd.

De bouw aan de replica van ‘De 7 Provinciën' behoort tot een van de grootste en meest uitdagende historische scheepsbouwprojecten ter wereld. De werf realiseert de bouw van de schepen door middel van re-integratie- en werkervaringstrajecten en speelt op die manier een belangrijke rol in het leven van langdurige werkelozen voor wie de afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt in de loop der jaren door omstandigheden te groot is geworden.

Battle Ground Academy was established in 1889. Named due to its original location on the battle ground of the Civil War Battle of Franklin, BGA was founded on the principles of character, scholarship and excellence.

The first campus was erected at the corner of Columbia Avenue and Cleburne Street. S.V. Wall and W.D. Mooney were chosen as the first to head the new academy. In 1902, the original school building burned and the school was relocated on a site on Columbia Avenue in Franklin.

BGA was established to educate young men, but young women were also allowed to attend. The school operated as a day school though students came from all over the South to attend. They boarded in private homes until the first dormitory was built in 1922, changing BGA to a boarding and day school.

After the construction of the first dormitory, the decision was made to go to an all male student body. The departure of the last women in 1929 ushered in a half-century when BGA was a boys' school in the absolute sense.

In the early 1970's, the boarding program was phased out, and the school was once again open to women before the decade ended. Thirty-seven enrolled the first year (1979) and the numbers have grown steadily since. At present, young women account for approximately 50 percent of the student body.

In 1996, the location of the Battle Ground Academy Upper School changed to its present site on Ernest Rice Lane off Mack Hatcher Parkway. In 2003, the Middle School joined the Upper School in this same location in brand new state-of-the-art facilities. These new facilities afforded the excellence in education and programs to continue. Additionally, in 1998, Battle Ground Academy acquired the former Harpeth Academy, and it became the BGA Lower School on Franklin Road. Currently, the school operates the two campuses and has the three divisions—Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School.

The Battle Ground Chamber of Commerce has an active Economic Development Committee whose mission it is to develop economic growth opportunities for The City of Battle Ground and its surrounding entities.

Our Economic Development Committee meets regularly to review opportunities for new businesses to come to Battle Ground and to increase revenue streams for existing businesses in Battle Ground.

In 1884 Alfred Baur of Switzerland arrived in Ceylon, by which Sri Lanka was then known. He worked in various firms in Colombo until in 1897 he founded his own enterprise, 'A. Baur, the Ceylon Manure Works', dealing exclusively in fertilizers. The first office was at Baillie Street, the stores at Cramer's Lane between Pettah and Hulftsdorp. When in 1901 the premises proved inadequate, stocks and machinery were shifted to a spacious property in Kelaniya. The new works were provided with the first railway siding in Ceylon and a laboratory.

Baurs are the pioneers of scientific manuring in Sri Lanka, particularly for coconuts. Since its inception the firm has maintained a first-class agricultural advisory service. Baurs' fertilizer mixtures were experimentally tested in the firm's own plantations. Whilst the trade in fertilizers was always the company's mainstay, other activities were added from time to time.

Baurs was the owner of several up-country tea estates. The famous Palugaswewa Coconut property in the Chilaw District, was a world-renowned show-piece of efficient management with highest productivity and diversification.

In 1928 the firm became 'A. Baur & Company' and in 1938 was incorporated in Ceylon as a Limited Liability Company. In 1941 Baur's Building at Upper Chatham Street in the Fort was completed. It is an elegant, imposing structure and a much acclaimed architectural landmark in Colombo, which houses the Company's Head Office. Alfred Baur, Founder and Life Director, died in 1951 in Geneva.

After the Second World War, A Baur & Co. Ltd. expanded rapidly, becoming one of the major importers and distributors in Sri Lanka of agro-chemicals, pharmaceutical specialties, industrial chemicals and textile dyes.

A factory for the local manufacture of agricultural sprayers and an agro-chemicals repacking facility were built. The fertilizer mixing works have been

expanded over the years and now constitute an imposing complex at Kelaniya. The import department, with extensive stores and other facilities, is housed at Grandpass in Colombo. There are branches of the firm in Kandy and Anuradhapura.

Today the firm employs in its Colombo establishments about 800 people. To mark its centenary the Alfred Baur Memorial Trust was established in 1997; it will render assistance to rural areas. As part of the centenary celebrations a book entitled ' A . Baur & Co. Ltd. 100 years in Sri Lanka' was published. In tracing back the history of the firm, tribute is being paid not only to the founder but also to the many fellow-workers who contributed much to the success of the firm.

Today at the beginning of the 21st century Baurs looks forward with optimism to continued growth and development. As always, the name 'Baurs' stands for trust and reliability, quality and innovation.
