Our mission is to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.

History

In 1963 at the height of the civil rights movement, 23 headmasters of selective independent schools made a mutual commitment to change the profiles and compositions of their student bodies. Through A Better Chance, they would broaden their enrollment to include students of color who were economically disadvantaged but academically able. Chosen for their motivation and demonstrated achievement, 55 students from low-income families were selected to complete their secondary education at these founding independent schools.

A Better Chance Scholars are a racially diverse group. Approximately 65% are African-American; 20% Latino; 6% Asian American; about 1% Native American; and 8% describe themselves as multi-racial or other. Approximately one-third live at or below the federal poverty line, and virtually all come from working class families. More than 65% of our Scholars come from single-parent households. A Better Chance has grown from 55 students enrolled at nine schools to nearly 1,900 students enrolled in 2008/2009 school year.

History & Organization

The Epilepsy Association of Maryland was incorporated in 1964 by a group of physicians and parents of children with epilepsy who recognized a need for more than just medical treatment for individuals with epilepsy.

As time progressed, the organization began providing services to individuals with varying types of disabilities. To reflect a broader targeted population, Abilities Network (AN) was incorporated in 2000, and has grown from the volunteer-driven facilitation of support groups and public/professional education to our current extensive and varied organization.

Through its many expansions over the past 40+ years, AN continues to work hand-in-hand with its sister organization, the Epilepsy Foundation of the Chesapeake Region (EFCR). Today over 10,000 people are served statewide through a multiplicity of programs and services made available to individuals diagnosed with varying disabilities and to families at-risk.

A 'Associação Brasileira de Internet das Coisas - ABINC', é uma organização sem fins lucrativos, cujos objetivos principais são incentivar a troca de informações técnicas e gerenciais, fomentar a atividade comercial, promover a atividade de pesquisa e desenvolvimento e representar os diversos agentes presentes no mercado de Internet das Coisas (IoT / M2M), junto às autoridades governamentais encarregadas das telecomunicações brasileiras.

Fundada em dezembro de 2015, partiu de uma iniciativa de seu presidente e os diretores de marketing, jurídico e de relações públicas. Havia então a necessidade de se criar uma entidade que fosse legítima e representativa, de âmbito nacional, e que permitisse atuar em todas as frentes do setor do que hoje se conhece, de maneira mais generalista, como: 'Internet das Coisas'.

Esta é, na verdade, uma área que ainda se encontra em estado de formação - onde cada setor e nicho de mercado ainda precisa definir quais são as tecnologias mais aplicáveis, e era ainda muito mais incipiente no momento de criação desta organização. Com um objeto social "sem fins lucrativos", a ABINC espera conseguir livre acesso pelas instituições acadêmicas e de pesquisa técnica que lideram os avanços dos diversos protocolos, modelos técnicos, etc.

Como também esperamos manter relações com empresas que estão liderando avanços nas diversas "componentes da rede" relacionadas com soluções em campo na área do IoT: sensores, redes, gateways, atuadores, servidores, meios de transmissão, etc. Desde o início consideramos que formar uma Associação que representasse o mercado perante a Anatel, o Ministério das Comunicações, as autoridades constituídas do país e outros órgãos governamentais e de fomento de pesquisa com legitimidade, seria a melhor maneira de realizar estes objetivos, promovendo a integração entre estes agentes, com troca de informações técnicas e gerenciais, fomente o mercado e sua evolução sustentável.
